We can provide more scholarships for nursing students, allowing them to graduate and enter the workforce without the crushing debt that plague our Millennials
Every year for more than 15 years, I have presented breakout sessions to about a 1,000 students at the National Student Nurses Association's (NSNA) Annual Conference. It's my favorite conference, rejuvenating me for the rest of the year, giving me faith in the nursing profession's future. I meet students who are the cream of the crop, who ask me with a straight face, "Dr Hess, what do I have to do to become a leader?"
Like you, I have a lot of organizations pursuing me for my money. Over the years I have settled on the Foundation of the NSNA, on which I have been a trustee for the last five years. I want to make sure that future nurses don't enter the nursing profession with a crushing education loan debt. I have even written this group into my estate. There is a selfish motivation here as well: These students are going to be taking care of me and my family as I enter retirement this year and beyond.
